Horizontal Directional Drilling
Trenchless utility installation under roads, driveways, landscaping, and waterways. Pilot hole to pullback, with every bore path located and cleared before the drill head moves.
Florida directional boring, from pilot hole to pullback
Horizontal directional drilling (HDD), also called directional boring, installs pipe and conduit along a steerable bore path beneath obstacles: roads, driveways, parking lots, mature landscaping, even canals and waterways. Surface disruption is limited to a small entry pit and an exit pit; everything between them stays untouched.
Every bore runs the same disciplined sequence: a pilot hole drilled along the engineered path, reaming passes that widen the bore to size, then pullback, where the product pipe is pulled through in one continuous run. In Florida sand with a high water table, drilling fluid management and shot planning are what separate a clean bore from a frac-out, and our crews plan both before the rig unloads.
Most drilling accidents are locating failures. That is why Very Best Utilities is a drilling contractor with its own utility locating division: every bore path is swept with electromagnetic locating and ground penetrating radar before the pilot hole starts, cross bores are engineered out instead of discovered later, and the as-built documents exactly where your new line sits.
We bore for electric and fiber conduit, water services, sewer laterals and force mains, and gas and irrigation sleeves, from a single residential driveway crossing to multi-shot commercial and municipal runs, anywhere in Florida.
What's included
- Electric, fiber, and communications conduit installation
- Water services, sewer laterals, and force mains
- Road, driveway, sidewalk, and waterway crossings
- Gas and irrigation sleeves and casings
- Pre-bore utility locating and path clearance (EM + GPR)
- Drilling fluid management for Florida sand and high water table
- Multi-shot bores through congested urban corridors
- As-built documentation of every installed line
Systematic. Documented. Every time.
Project consultation
We review your scope, site plans, and available utility records to understand exactly what your project needs.
One-call coordination
We coordinate with Florida 811 (Sunshine State One Call) so public utility owners mark their lines and share records.
Field locating
Our technicians deploy electromagnetic locators and GPR on site to identify, verify, and mark every utility.
Documentation & reporting
You receive maps, depth readings, and professional reports meeting ASCE 38 standards.
Horizontal Directional Drilling FAQ
How much does directional boring cost in Florida?
Pricing runs per linear foot, driven by pipe diameter, depth, soils, and site access; short residential crossings are usually quoted as a flat job. Send us the two endpoints and what you need installed, and we quote a firm number, not a range.
How deep are directional bores?
Typical utility bores run 3-10 feet deep, dropping deeper under roads and waterways. Depth is engineered per crossing and soil conditions.
What size and type of pipe can you install?
HDPE, PVC, and casing from small communication conduits up to service laterals and force mains. For large-diameter municipal work we can advise and refer.
Is my yard or driveway destroyed afterwards?
No, that is the point. HDD needs only a small entry pit and exit pit; the surface between them is untouched.
Can you bore under canals and wetlands?
Yes. Waterway and wetland crossings are a core HDD use case, with the bore profile engineered to keep cover under the crossing and the permitting handled as part of the job.
What is a frac-out and how do you prevent it?
A frac-out is drilling fluid escaping to the surface through weak soil. Prevention is engineering: the right fluid mix for the soil, safe depth of cover, and pressure monitoring during the bore. Florida sand makes fluid discipline mandatory, so it is in every bore plan we write.
Do you locate existing utilities before drilling?
Always, with our own crews: electromagnetic locating plus GPR across the full bore path, including the private lines 811 never marks. Cross bores into sewer lines are the industry's worst failure mode, and path clearance is how they are prevented.
